Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a relatively new, but already internationally widely tested and medically recognized method for the gentle treatment of actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma.
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a special form of phototherapy. During pretreatment a photosensitizing cream is applied to the skin alterations which are later treated with a strong, red light for 8 to 12 minutes. When light is directed onto tissue containing the photosensitizing drug, the drug becomes activated and diseased skin cells and tissue are rapidly destroyed, whilst sparing healthy cells and tissue.
As compared to other treatments such as surgical excision, cryo-, laser- or chemotherapy the advantages of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) are the gentle, very selective treatment and the cosmetically very satisfying results.
hautok is a reference center for Photodynamic Therapy, which means that professional expert meetings are held at hautok where dermatologists and dermatological staff are trained in PDT.
